Photos taken with Canon D10 Powershot
My husband and my eldest daughter (or is it oldest??) have recently taken up surfing. They are still at the beginning stages which means we have to find the beginner’s surf… we are pretty much wave chasers on the weekend. The past couple of weekends we can be found in Waikiki. My two younger kids love Waikiki because it’s perfect for them to play around in as dad and sis hit the surf. It’s perfect for me because I can feel safe that they won’t be swept out to sea or crushed by waves. It can get crowded but luckily we’ve been able to claim our piece of sand and it’s really no bother. The people watching alone for me is entertainment enough.
When it gets too hot, I get in the water. Yes, I am one of those who enters very cautiously, elbows up at my ribs, fingers crossed together tightly in a ball at my heart center, and the occassional “OYYYYYYY” as the waves come in and grab me above my zone of comfort…. Yeeeees, it totally takes me a good 5 minutes to fully immerse myself while my kids taunt me with constant splashes (like it’s really going to make me want to get in any faster). When I finally do come in, it’s quite refreshing!
I am not a good swimmer, that’s my confession. WHAT?! I Knoooooow! I get it all the time, “You live in Hawaii and you don’t swim?” I never said I don’t swim. I’m just not a good swimmer, therefore I haven’t taken up surfing or even paddleboarding. I SUP’d (Stand Up Paddleboard) once… and with a life belt strapped to my waist. I can’t tread water, so it makes it hard for someone like me to get into the deep end of anything liquid. When my husband decides to take a break from surfing, he lingers over to me and we enjoy the shallow end together.
I’m just as happy being in the water (with one of my kid’s floaties if I’m lucky), facing Waikiki, looking over to Diamond Head, marveling at all the people that come to Hawaii from all over the world, breathing in the air… just being. Lucky to have great well grounded, smart kids, a devoted, loving husband who works hard for us and a love of photography to capture all the wonderful things around me.
All these photos taken with my Canon D10.. a handy camera that’s lightweight, small and waterproof… it does the job for these types of memory making.
Anyone else out there who are not comfortable in the water and has overcome it? Any tips you can share with me would be awesome!
Have a great Monday!
Much aloha, ~j
