Waikiki Photographer, Oahu, Hawaii
These days, life has been so busy. When you live on a vacation island, where do you go when you want to get away from it all? That’s a tough one… when we have some time on the weekends we head to the beach…. OF COURSE!! I never leave home without a camera. EVER! Lately, I’ve been taking my 35mm film camera and photographing my kids. They are growing up so fast! Hard to believe that we moved to Hawaii a little over 3 years ago and life has been richly rewarding, in so many, many ways. I look back at photos of my children when we first moved here and they were just itty bitty people.. and now they are maturing, growing up, changes in bodies, faces, mannerisms. What hasn’t changed is their love for the ocean when we finally get there to have a little fun.
When I photograph my kids, obviously, I’m not conducting a family photo shoot like I would do if you hired me to photograph your family. So my pace is slow, turtle sloooow. I just sit and wait for moments. You can’t rush these kinds of portraits and you can’t orchestrate them, you have to let them just happen, just be. This is another side of being a well rounded photographer… you gotta know when to shoot ’em and capture those unexpected moments. I just might make this image a big enlargement… I just love it.
In case you are wondering where this place is, we went to Three Tables up in the fabled North Shore of Oahu… just past Haleiwa town, next to the fire station. It’s a great place for snorkeling when the ocean is calm. I only go snorkeling under specific conditions.. the weather has got to be hot enough for me to go into the water (I don’t like to be cold when I come out of the water, lol) and I always wear a life jacket… I don’t know how to swim! That’s another story I’ll share another time… the life jacket gives me security and access to the beautiful undersea world.
I’m a people observer … and I also believe in practicing my craft. Film photography is very different than digital photography, (so on my site, you’ll always see my personal photos shot with film)…. I love how the sunlight highlights falls on her and how the image blurs out into the blue water.
This beach is pretty popular so it can get busy… but not as busy as Waikiki.
There is a great area at this beach for rock climbing for the kids and exploring which my little guy loves to do.
Almost to the top…
In the distance, you can see two of the three “tables”. It’s great because those three tables slows the coming waves and makes the area in front of it (underwater) and calm cove full of fish.
The sand is nice and well, sandy… not gravel-ly, course sand… but there’s isn’t any shade, so be sure to bring some sun protection as it does get hot hanging out there.
The drop off from the shore happens pretty fast and the fish are right there!
My husband was a fish in another life.. he just loves the ocean. He can swim and explore for hours!
Put this beach on your vacation bucket list of “Things to Do, Places to See” on your next trip to Oahu. Great place for snorkeling when the conditions are right. All shots taken using Kodak Ektar 100 film. Thanks for visiting my little corner of the internet! Have a great weekend! Warmest Aloha, ~j
