Crying Tiger Steak: Cooking Thai Food at Home
This is one of my Thai favorite recipes and I love cooking Thai food at home. It’s quick, easy and very, very tasty! It’s delicious with some steamed jasmine rice or on top of salad greens for a low carb option. The best cut of steak is flank or skirt steak.. but on this day I made it with Rib Eye which works just as nicely. I love the side dipping sauce. This steak dish is not “Crying Tiger Steak” without the dipping sauce. My favorite way of serving it is with sticky rice- as pictured above. I will teach you how to make sticky rice another time. It’s also pretty good without the dipping sauce as well, but if you do make the dipping sauce, you can control the amount of heat you like and try not to cry when you dare yourself to go spicier!
Crying Tiger Steak
Ingredients
- Your favorite cut steak
- 1 T Oyster Sauce
- 1 T Seasoning Sauce (Soya Bean Sauce- Golden Mountain Brand)
- 1 1/2 T Fish Sauce (Squid Brand)
- 1 T lime juice
- 1 T tamarind juice
- 1 1/2 T palm sugar ( or 1T granulated sugar)
- 1 1/2 T finely sliced shallots
- optional chili flakes to taste for spicy or chopped Thai chili pepper
- 2 T finely chopped green onion
- 2 T finely chopped cilantro
- 2 tsp toasted rice powder
Instructions
- Add oyster sauce and seasoning sauce onto your steak to marinade. Marinade for at least an hour. Grill to desired temperature.
- In a bowl, combine fish sauce, lime juice, tamarind juice, palm sugar, shallots. Can omit tamarind juice if not available... but add it if you have it.
- When your steak is finished grilling, allow to rest for a few minutes. Slice steak against the grain.
- To toast rice powder, place 1 T of uncooked rice grains on a heated dry pan. Stir rice grains until medium to golden brown. Add toasted rice grains to spice blender and blend until a course grain.
- When ready to serve, add chopped green onion, chopped cilantro and toasted rice powder to your fish sauce dip. Don't forget to add some of that steak juice (so full of flavor!!) into your dipping sauce for added yummy! Serve with steamed, jasmine rice and grilled steak.
