Photographer in Oahu
Today is my son’s 11th birthday. I’ve recently had some sad news come through my FaceBook newsfeed and it got me thinking. Actually, it made me solidify the reasons why I do what I do. We don’t take enough pictures of our families. I know, in this age of phones and phone camera’s it makes taking pictures easy… but how many of those pictures don’t see the light of day and stay in your phone? What happens to those pictures when you upgrade to the latest phone or worse, what happens when your phone just stops working? Dropped? Shattered? Accidentally dropped in the sink (or toilet? EEEKS!) What happens to our precious pictures? Gone.. Poof.. just like that. I have a brick of an external hard drive with years 2000-2010 worth of .jpgs just sitting stagnant in external hard drive oblivion… so I’m not judging anyone!! First one to say guilty. But with recent sad news on my FaceBook, I hold the pictures that I take more dear to my heart and make a point to get them printed so that I have something tangible to hold, physically share, and display. It’s my proof, it’s my memories, it’s my life. I need them. I need them to look at, to hold in my hand, to place in a messy stack, to insert into an album. When I am long gone from this world, my pictures are what my children will have. I need photographs of my family and so do you.
I love looking back at my son’s photos. When he was just born, his first birthdays, milestones big and small, I love being able to look at them. Even the pictures before I made professional photography my full time passion. In case your wondering, I shot these photographs on a film camera that is naturally square…no cropping! no filters! I promise!! He’s such a good boy, coming with me to the beach, dutifully standing where I ask him to be. He automatically knows to put his hands in his pockets too. 🙂
I love family photography so much. Oahu, Hawaii especially is a perfect backdrop. I love being able to get a snapshot in that moment of time, whatever the occasion would be, despite my subjects attitude. My son is always happy to oblige me. He makes a perfect subject.
When it’s breezy, he loves to grab the beach towel and pretend he’s flying…
This is totally my son… shorts, slippers, t-shirt, glasses and messy hair. I am secretly hoping that by 12, he would want his hair to look nice. 🙂 (He hates hair styling products right now.)
The beach, the sky, the rocks and a little tiny person being happy… that makes a great photo to place in my album.
My son is the youngest of my 3 kids. I have 2 older daughters that are typical teenagers except they don’t like to come out to the beach too much with mom and dad anymore. It makes me so sad! I know!! I think they are nuts too! But that doesn’t stop me from taking their pictures. It’s in my blood, I have to. I hope you feel the same… contact me soon so that I can give you back your family, your loves, your memories through my camera lens. I hope to hear from you soon!!
**All images shot on Yashica Mat 124G, Medium Format Film .. interested in having me shoot you in film? Let me know, I’d love to chat with you about that.
