Oahu Family Photographer
I often get asked by clients if they should book a morning or sunset session. What better way to offer up my suggestions than to blog it. Personally, I think both sessions are gorgeous in color and light and it is a matter of personal choice. In this post, I will highlight my full hour sunset sessions. You can read about my morning sessions HERE. Of course, everyone wants the ideal sunset like the one pictured above, but it is up to Mother Nature to deliver. Sunsets are different every day, some are clear with not a cloud in the sky, others are overcast and grey, I just can’t guarantee what the sunset will look like, but I can guarantee beautiful family portraits regardless.
For sunset sessions, we begin one hour before the scheduled sunset and always at my favorite beaches on the WEST side of the island. I get my sunset times HERE. By started an hour before, there is still plenty of sunlight to take portraits. The sun has a warm tone to it, unlike morning shoots, where the sun takes on a more cooler tone. During this time, I photograph all the individual kid shots, siblings, mom and dad, some group shots and so on.

I would recommend families with little ones 6 years old and under probably go for a morning shoot rather than a sunset shoot. With the time difference and a full day of play in the sun and sand, sunset shoots are stressful for them. They are really tired and cranky during these sunset shoots and so mom and dad get really cranky and stressed too. With this being said, if you have your heart set on a sunset shoot, you know your children best and I am sure you will prepare your young ones throughout the day with plenty of hydration, sunblock and naps before your sunset shoot.
Oahu Sunsets
Sunsets photo shoots are perfect for silhouettes. I don’t attempt these all the time as the sky has to be just right, but when it turns out, it’s really cool!
