About a month ago, we ventured over to the North Shore to check things out. We’ve lived here on Oahu going on 3 years now and there are places that we have yet to check out. The Waialua Sugar Mill in North Shore was one such place. We loaded up the kids and a friend to go and explore. I was armed with my 35mm film camera (Canon EOS Elan 7 E Date 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only) and we ended up here. All images in this post shot on Kodak Portra 400 film.
This place harvests their own coffee and chocolate. Not to mention, they have some nice touristy tchotchke’s (trinkets) and local honey, jam’s and spices. That big pod in the picture is a cacao pod, BTW… Chocolate!
One of the proprietor’s, we call him “Uncle”(that’s him with my son and friend)… actually, everyone here (in Hawaii) is an “Auntie” or an “Uncle”, related or not. It’s just what we say instead of “Sir”, “Miss” or “M’aam”. Anyway, Uncle was very nice and brought us to the coffee and chocolate harvesting area and showed us around, gave us a personal tour to show us how they harvest all this goodness. We sampled a few brewed coffee’s and tasted some raw coffee and chocolate beans. Fun and educational stuff for the keiki’s (kids).
Hawaiian touristy trinkets and stuff.
Pancake mix to take home, local honey’s and some DELICIOUS chocolate and peanut spread. OMG, this stuff is heaven, I bought one bottle of each, chocolate and peanut butter and peanut butter. I forgot to spread it on something and just ate right from the spoon. No, I really didn’t forget, LOL. Reminds me of Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter (oh, how I miss that stuff). . Good stuff!!
In the same area in the Waialua North Shore Soap Factory. They make all hand made soaps here and it’s just kinda cool to go in and see what they did to the place.
Cute little soapies in the window.
Pretty soaps on display.
If you are heading to the North Shore of Oahu, make a quick stop to the Waialua Sugar Mill. It will probably only take up an hour of your time and you can say “been there, done that.”
