Hurricane Coming This Way…

Hawaii Hurricane preparedness, photographer, family, officialIt’s Wednesday afternoon and the atmosphere is pretty chill.  It’s about 77 degrees out on my part of the island of Oahu and quiet.  Pretty serene.  Hurricane Iselle  is expected to hit the Big Island tomorrow night making it’s way through the islands, followed by Hurricane Julio.  The weather forecasters on the news are keeping us updated on the progress of the hurricane on an hourly basis and my phone app alerts keep popping up.  Last year, we had Hurricane Flossie and she hit us with a whimper.  Hurricane Iselle is expected to hit the island with more force.

Costco was a mess yesterday.  I had procrastinated for weeks and couldn’t wait any longer,  I had to make my monthly haul, but this time, I was along side about 300 other shoppers 30 minutes before opening and everyone was making a beeline for the bottled water.  Holy Cow.  Trying to get out of that area was like a fish trying to get upstream.  I overhead a mother saying to her child in the crowd, “This is the best time to live Aloha, so live Aloha.”  Yeup, I fully agree.  It’s so easy to go into a mass hysteria and push and shove your way in, especially when you see shoppers grabbing 5 stacks of bottled water and hoping there will be enough for you when you get to the front of the line.  But, you make your way through the crowd, have patience, smile, let people go in front of you to get where they need to go and you just remain calm.

I have been slowly stock piling here and there with every grocery trip, so I wasn’t sweating it too much.  Although, I can’t help feel like I should have more in my pantry.  I can honestly say, we have enough and if my neighbors come knocking on my door, we will make enough for them too.  “This is the best time to live Aloha, so live Aloha.”

Three years ago when I lived in California, I would have never touched Spam.  But you know what?  Spam is the bomb!  Don’t knock it, it’s good stuff.  I wouldn’t have it everyday, but it is a treat when I do.  My kids are excited that we will be popping open some cans for a quick easy meal.  One can, fried up with some scrambled eggs and rice, feeds our family of 5… you don’t know what you’re missing!  It keeps well in emergencies, it’s versatile and it’s filling.  I can’t imagine my life without Spam and living in Hawaii.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who have been messaging me via text and FB… we appreciate all your love, support and concern.  We have our water, phones and iPads will be fully charged, canned goods are stocked, plenty of toilet paper stashed away, flashlights,  lantern, batteries on the ready, both cars have full gas tanks, hurricane insurance for the house and a lot of love.  We are as ready as we can be, but hopefully it won’t be as bad and will weaken as it makes it’s way down our path.  I will be posting updates  on my  FB Fanpage and my Instagram, if you care to friend/follow me, please do.
