Oahu Photographer: Film
Aloha! On my spare time when I am out and about, I always carry a film camera with me, not a digital camera. If you’ve gone through my website, you are quick to learn that I never photograph my personal work with my digital camera. At one time I did, but carrying around my big expensive camera is a liability for me, so I leave it at home. I’ve been shooting with film because it allows me to take a photo and forget about it. It’s my job and passion to be able to take beautiful photos of you and your family when you vacation on Oahu and my digital photography experience allows me to do that. When I am out with my family, honestly, I don’t want to come home and download files to my laptop and work on them… I do this everyday with my professional work with my family photo shoots at the beach. So I bring one of my film camera’s and point and shoot. When I am out of shots, I put in another roll of film in my camera and mail out the little can to get developed and scanned and emailed back to me and Voila!… my memories to see.
That’s me with my new to me old Yashica 124G. I adore this film camera.
On this day, we had friends visiting from the mainland and we went on a hike on the west side of the island. I brought my new to me Yashica Mat 124 G that I recently acquired. This was my first roll of color film that I shot. I only get 12 shots per roll. I absolutely love how they turned out. The experience using this camera is much slower. You have to look down into the view finder, compose your shot, focus and shoot and wind the crank to set up for the next shot. It definitely is not instant like a digital camera is. For me, I love the whole process. The end product is visually fantastic for a photography geek like me. Here’s a photo of my son and the first photo on this blog is of the Waianae Coast.
There was a young group behind us exploring the first pillbox. They were making me nervous when they reached our pillbox because there is a narrow ridge that you can walk on (if you are daring enough) for a photo op. *I* am not DARING… *I* am afraid of heights and have wobbly knees just standing on the roof of the pillbox I was sitting on taking these pictures. These young people were just trotting on that ridge like it was nothing… all I have to say is to please be careful if you attempt these hikes. Watching them was enough to give me a heart attack… I know, I’m probably showing my age! LOL.
This was shot on the way down from the pillbox. BTW, I don’t crop the images into squares, this is how the film is. Cool huh?
After our hike, we went out to a fabulous stretch of beach. I almost lost my new camera when a rogue wave came into our sitting area and got most everything wet. Thank goodness I brought my daughter’s suede bottomed backpack where I had put my camera. It was the first thing I grabbed when I realized that rogue wave was not stopping. These camera’s are not easy to find, so great care needs to be taken when being the owner of these beautiful devices. Had I brought my digital camera… it would have probably been a casualty of the wave. So see! That’s why I leave it at home. That is a shot of my husband (above)… @aloha_dave on Instagram if you care to follow. He is an accomplished photographer in his own right. He enjoys black and white photography and shooting street scenes. Much different than my personal tastes.
Gorgeous tumbles of waves.
My son always says he doesn’t want to go to the beach, but when we are there, he always seems to enjoy himself!
Beautiful view. It was a gorgeous sunny day on this day.
I don’t know who brought this here… but I love it.
Thanks for visiting and hope you enjoyed a little of my personal life in pictures. You can see more on my Instagram @jennbrotchie
Definitely get in touch for a family photo shoot if you are on Oahu on vacation, we’ll have a great time!!
