I have been practicing a lot lately with my 35mm film camera. Mostly personal photographs of my own family. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have a goal to stretch my photography skills and try my hand with film. I must say, it’s been a breath of fresh air for me. To shoot film means to wait for the moments to unfold and take the shot. To shoot film means not relying on the LCD screen for an instant image. To shoot film means to be patient and accept the qualities that film lends itself to in the final product. Film photography is not something that I am offering yet in my photo session packages, I haven’t quite made the leap yet. However, it will be my goal to somehow incorporate it into my business. Time will tell where that path leads me to. But for now, I am having a wonderful time experimenting and receiving back from the lab some wonderful memories of my own family.
These photos were taken a while back. Remember when Oahu got hit with monster 30-40 foot waves a month ago? We ventured to the North Shore to see them, of course from a safe distance. That’s my son being a photographer.
The little speck there to the left is my husband. The littler speck next to him is my son. My husband was busy photographing the huge waves. I had perched myself a comfortable distance away.
My kids love to explore the little tide pools to see what nature’s treasures they could find.
Amazing isn’t it? Look at the sea spray in the background! I love the haze it creates. Look at the clarity in the still water in the foreground. Beautiful details.. Makes my heart sing.
My Bella. Now remember, these photos are not digital. This is film photography, so there will be grain in the photos… but I think it’s a beautiful quality and a characteristic that you will get with film. Look at her freckles!!
This day was sunny but overcast and I was snapping these photos right about 11 am. The clouds were a terrific diffuser. Do you see the big waves in the background?
Anytime I could get my children in the same frame… I’m happy. I don’t care that they are not all looking into the camera and smiling…. this is our life, real moments. The stuff that makes my heart grow more as a mom and the stuff that excites me as a professional photographer.
Thanks for visiting my website… I totally appreciate each and every one of you that stop by from all over the world. For those of you who contact me and inquire, it means the world to me. It tells me that my work speaks to you and that you want me to tell your story, Wow.. such a huge honor!! I hope our paths cross someday and I am able to photograph your heart and give it back to you. These photos you see in this post? It’s my heart that I’m sharing with YOU! Warmest Aloha, ~j
