My dearest friend dragged me out of the house at 7 am on a Sunday morning. She had been wanting to go check out the Farmer’s Market at Kapiolani Community College. I was game! I had never been and I had heard a lot about it, but to 3 kids and a husband, having to wake up so early on a Saturday did not sound appealing. But when my friend Jenn mentioned it.. I was excited to explore! I’m so glad we went, we had a lot of fun. This place is so busy! I took my 35 mm film camera and my iPhone, left my digital at home. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen some of the snaps I took when I was there with my iPhone. Look at the beautiful display of swiss chard, above. The colors of the fresh produce was so amazing! Here are some highlights.
Lots of beautiful succulents and flowers. There was a tray on the ground with these blooms! Oh the colors!!
I had Jenn hold these avocado’s. These are Hawaiian avocado’s. Look at the size!! These are a bit more creamier than mainland avocado’s and hold a lot more water content. I made guacamole with them once and that was the last time, it was too watery. These would probably be delicious in a salad or sandwich.
These are rambutan fruit. A beautiful pod of thick dull soft spikes poking out from vibrant red. Peel off the skin and inside is a soft white sweet, slightly tangy fleshy fruit. Refreshing, my kids love it.
Other than produce and flowers, there are various food stands. This was at about 8am and the lines for all the food stands was long. Here was a combination Thai/Vietnamese stand… Vietnamese Pho soup and sandwiches. It was crazy busy, lots of Japanese tourists get bussed in and are busy taking selfies and eating the delicious foods. Lot’s of beautiful orchids too.
More beautiful things to look at.
I left with $25 worth of produce and fresh breads. Definitely worth a trip. On our way out we noticed this beautiful display of plants that the college exhibits. I was blown away with the size of these hanging blooms. I have no idea what they are named, but it’s just beautiful to look at.
I was surprised to see cactus! Of all places.
If you look closely on the left image, you see bird feeders and the little tiny birds feeding from it and some pretty green birds hanging on the branches. There was about a dozen birds all trying to stake claim on the bird feeders. There’s a bench nearby to just sit and watch. We had a nice chat with a couple who were sitting and had been watching for a couple hours already.
Definitely get there early to enjoy the finest and freshest produce and forget Starbucks.. just go get breakfast and an organic coffee or smoothie while you are there. Just be prepared for some lines for the food. Saturday mornings only! I can’t wait for my mom to visit, we are definitely taking her here.
