(All images shot on film, 35mm Canon Elan 7e, Kodak Ektar 100) One of my husband’s favorite places to snorkel on Oahu is Electric Beach. If you like open water snorkeling, this is a great place to check out. It’s located one exit past Ko’Olina in Waianae, on the west side, and adjacent to the power plant. From what I understand, the power plant spews out warm water into the ocean and attracts a multitude of fish. This spot has been a start point for scuba divers as well. It’s not a crowded beach and really doesn’t look like much in terms of what you think “Hawaii Paradise” should look like. It’s enough to spend a couple of hours of snorkeling and the kid’s having fun with the incoming waves. If you are a people watcher and book reader, like me, hanging out on the shore under a big beach umbrella (with plenty of sunblock on) is the way to go.You have to hurdle a few incoming waves to get out to the open water.
Great place to bring the boogie boards and ride some waves in. My kids love it.
That’s usually where you can find me, under the big umbrella, guarding the snack box and reading a book, occasionally looking up at the big blue beautiful ocean.
On your next vacation to Oahu, be sure to check out Electric Beach for some open water snorkeling. Make sure to put it on your “Places To Visit/Things To Do” List.
