Oahu Hawaii Family Photographer
Often times I am asked about candid photography… do I do them? YES! Of course I do! The funny thing about candid photography is that it is really up to you on how “candid” you want to be with me. I will step back and let you do your thing, “Be Candid, GO!” and I am met with nervous laughs and the look of being a deer caught in the headlights. Most of what I do is to be sure that I give you a variety of shots of your family, just take a look around at my website blog posts and it will give you a good idea of the variety of shots I provide to you. These more “candid” shots require some direction from me, but most of it is all YOU and YOUR FAMILY and how you react with each other. I really love these kinds of shoots and I allow some time for the more fun, not so traditional posed shots. I can guide you and give you ideas… but the more you let your guard down and are receptive to being silly, being huggy and kissy, the more candid you will be for my camera and that’s where the magic begins!
This was taken toward the very end of our shoot, in fact, I think we were finished with the shoot. The kids were “done” and off went the clothes and as far away from the lady with the camera as they could get. I looked over my shoulder, with the ocean mist breezing by, grandma was there taking a photo of her grand baby and I took the shot.
This was a 3 generation pose. I asked dad to give a kiss to his baby boy and baby boy reached over for grandpa’s nose. I took the shot. Fun, candid moments happen like this and I love when they do! You can’t really direct a baby to grab grandpa’s nose, so just let it happen. It’s so awesome!

Mamma wanted her son to run into her arms, he didn’t want to. He wanted to splash water and have fun… fine by me!! Things won’t go the way you want them to go, but that’s ok!!
At this point of the shoot, the boys here let down their guard and their shyness melted. Here’s a great example of suggesting a pose… I asked dad to put his younger son on his shoulders, well, big brother was not gonna be left out, so he comes running underneath dad and I yell for mom to hurry to get into the shot and give her young son a kiss… and I took the shot. I love it!
We were winding down our shoot and it was just really warm on this morning. The little ones started to shed their clothing. They were all joining in getting the baby to sing… I took the shot. Sometimes the candid stuff happens at the end when everyone is more than ready to call it a day!!
This was one of the very last shots I took. The youngest one just wanted to play with his toys. I looked to where he was playing and decided that the rest of the family should be there as well. I love how the palm trees were blowing and knew it would make a beautiful frame and backdrop for this family. I directed the other children to sit and stand and mom and dad to sit there… but instead of looking into my camera, I asked them to look towards each other and smile… and BOOM, just like that, a fun “candid” photo.
A fun shot that is always fun to capture. Bringing baby to the shore is always a favorite. Believe it or not, some babies do not like the sand or water because of sensory sensitivity or they just plain do not like it. Much to the disappointment of mom and dad, I get a lot of crying babies.. but for this trio, baby didn’t mind at all.
Props…. props are always welcome. I do not supply props but I encourage you to bring them if you have them. It gives children something to do, but fair warning, if mom and dad decide they are finished with the prop, be prepared for an upset child. Just sayin’.
I love this shot. One of my most favorites. I suggested we try this shot with their son and let’s see what happens. I positioned dad, mom and son was a few feet away. When I counted to 3, young son ran into dad’s arms with a lift in the air. Perfection! This is what I call, “a candid posed shot”.
For this family photo shoot, the tree swing happened to be there, so we had a little fun with it. Such a fun image!!
This shot works because we let the kids be themselves. It would not be the same if their daughter was a bit more serious, lol. I try to encourage the kids to be themselves with a little direction from me.
Sometimes conditions are just right as the sun starts to go down during our sunset shoots. I might ask you to walk on the rocks so I can take a shot like this. Don’t be offended if I don’t ask you because sometimes conditions can be slippery on that wet rock and always Safety First!
Most kids love to be tossed up in the air and THIS photographer loves to take a picture of that!
I hope this post has given you some ideas on what we can do during our photo shoot. Keep in mind that not all families are up to being candid with me and that is OK too! I am all for the posed traditional shots but just know that I am totally up for the candid shots too. I won’t leave you hanging and wondering what to do. I will suggest some ideas and by all means, I am open to your ideas too. I hope to work with your family soon!! Please contact me at jenniferbrotchie@gmail.com Warmest Aloha, ~j
