If you must wear black, it is fantastic to offset with a bright color to give some variation to your wardrobe palette. I love that this combination shows black with a lovely shade of pink!
What to Wear for Your Photo Shoot
I get this question ALLLLLL the time. “We’re so excited!! What do you suggest we wear for our photo shoot?” After photographing hundreds of families, I would love to give you my opinion! Let me start off by saying that I am very grateful to have met so many wonderful families and I feel blessed and very honored to have these families hire me to photograph them. What color palette looks best? What do you think stands out the most? Should we wear all white and khaki’s, it seems to be the easiest for all of us? Jennifer! What should we wear to our photo shoot with you?
I think the most important thing for me to offer you as your professional photographer is that I strongly feel that you should stand out from the beautiful scenery that is Hawaii or any other location you happen to be at. I love COLOR… my photographic style is relaxed, natural and colorful. Nothing worse than to pay good money for professional photography and you blend into your surroundings or your surroundings take center stage. I always want you to take center stage! Above all, wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and that you can move it. If you don’t feel comfortable, it really translates in your photos.
Color Palettes for Your Photo Shoot
I love that this family came in beautiful vibrant colors! I’ve had a lot of families not really have a specific color scheme in mind but instead opt for whatever is in the suitcase that is colorful. It works!
Photo Shoot Wardrobe Color Ideas
This family had a vision! Light tropical views with shades of corals. Perfect!
Now I know there are some families who will want to wear white and khaki. While I do not prefer it, I won’t cancel our photoshoot over it, lol! My own personal opinion about the white and khaki combo is that I feel that you will blend in with your surroundings and that you won’t stand out and not to mention that it is a dated look. 5 years from now, a guest in your house might think you had the photo taken in 1999 rather than in the two thousand teen years. If you have to wear white and khaki, I would recommend pairing it with another color so that their is visual interest… because when there is visual interest, there is personality! 🙂 Or at least finding another color other than white for the gentlemen.
Soft Color Palette for Photo Shoots
This is a beautiful soft color palette for the beautiful morning glow in this scene. Dad’s wardrobe is the canvas that ties in the colors and patterns of the ladies in his life. You will notice they are not matchy matchy, but they DO coordinate quite nicely!
Photo Shoot Wardrobe Color Suggestions
The boys here are letting mamma stand out, just like she should! The boys and dad are wearing dark blues with different patterns that create visual interest and mom goes BOOM in that beautiful vibrant pink! It was extremely bright on this morning that the colors were just perfect against the striped background of the sky, ocean and sand… now, imagine if they were wearing all white, pretty vanilla.
Photo Shoot Colors to Wear
A lot of my families like to wear shades of blue. For large families, I know it is hard to coordinate colors especially with families residing in different states and meeting for a once in a lifetime vacation. I always suggest for someone to raise their hand and spread the word that the color scheme will be “X,Y,Z”. What does this mean? Tell your family the color scheme will be red, yellow and beige or orange and navy, or in the photograph above, blue, gray and beige. Keep these wardrobe colors in mind as you prepare, chances are you will coordinate! If someone shows up in bright neon yellow, he/she didn’t get the email!

Some will not prefer bright, colors because, it’s just not there thing… Hey, No Worries. Let me say this very important thing, YOUR photographs will be hung on YOUR walls, not MINE. With this being said, if you want to wear white and khaki, GO AHEAD! You will be looking at your photographs and if it makes you happy, please do! Do not let my opinions stop you 🙂
This family (above) got it right with the deep navy and jeans. The mother wore a deep navy shirt with a bright print and the son wore a gradient of blue and white, bookended with dad and daughter in solid blue. I think they knocked it out of the park.

Another big family group… tropical blues, corals, pinks, a plaid and a floral print… I love it! As their photographer waiting for them at the shore, I can’t tell you how excited I get inside when I see this kind of coordination walking toward me to have their photograph taken!
