Hanauma Bay, all images shot on 35mm film, Canon Elan 7e (you can go on my sidebar and check it out on Amazon.com) A must visit if it’s your first time on Oahu and you want to explore the water and see those beautiful fishies. There are other places on the island you could go to, but Hanauma Bay is a definite “must to on your to do list” if you are into this sort of thing. We go once a year when the tides are too high every where else.
We pack a lunch, bring our snorkel gear and unwind as a family. There’s my Jensen enjoying some chips. It also gives me a chance to hone my photography skills. I love bringing my film camera and a few rolls of film. It’s one thing to be able to see what you are shooting immediately on the LCD screen of your digital camera and entirely another thing to hope you got your settings right, manually (not auto) in a film camera. I can honestly say, 98% of my film shots come back to me perfect. I guess you can say it’s continuing education for me and understanding how light affects the final image…. but I digress, Hanauma Bay is located on the south east shore of Oahu and boasts many visitors yearly.

Best to go early and stake out a spot under the shade, as shade trees are sparse. If you don’t have snorkel gear, you can rent it there.
When you arrive you will be required to watch a short preservation video before you are let loose. Always snorkel with a snorkel buddy and PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT STAND ON THE PRECIOUS CORAL. I see way too many people do this and it’s just not cool… but DO explore the ocean safely and experience what Hawaii has to offer. It’s another world in the ocean.
Whenever you travel to Oahu for vacation and especially if it’s your first time, be sure to put snorkeling at Hanauma Bay on your “Things To Do On Oahu” list.
